Five Things I Learned
Font consistency is important and makes a design more cohesive. (And definitely not more than a couple fonts.)
Color of type has a lot to do with hierarchy in many ways. Just like in painting and other arts, contrast is important. The difference of light text on a dark background vs. dark text on a light background should be considered. Generally dark text is easier on the eyes.
Decorative fonts can detract from a design. Often more basic fonts are a better base to build from.
All capital letters should be used sparingly for emphasis. Text is much more appealing as the shape of letters, not just one big block.
Much like capital letters, centered text should be used sparingly for emphasis. Flush left justification is more readable than centered.
Five Things I Should
I should put more thought into how a two-page spread works together, and think more about the design as a whole than individual parts.

Typography is still design: don't be afraid to experiment. It doesn't all have to look the same to maintain a consistent design.

Consider type weight - type too light or too heavy negatively impacts the design.

It's okay to experiment with color, images, and other design elements. Don't crowd the design, but you don't have to skimp.

Consider the impact if negative space (not only with type, but color).
